(September 21, 2023) After weeks of trying to defend the indefensible, Doug Ford has announced that he will reverse his negligent and wrongheaded decision to open the Greenbelt to development. To everyone who stood up and demanded better from their Premier, fantastic work. Without all of you, we would not be here.

In wake of a damning ethics report, the collapse of public support and the resignation of two Cabinet ministers, the government has finally arrived at the correct decision. The Greenbelt exists to protect our environment for future generations, and to preserve the farmland that will feed them. It is not a commodity to be traded in backroom deals for personal gain. Urban sprawl is not a solution to our housing needs.

This is not the end of this story. The irregularities that led to the sale of public land in the first place still deserves a complete and thorough investigation. However, today is still a significant victory for the principles of transparency, public interest, and responsible land management.
